The football world is still reeling from the devastating news of Diogo Jota's untimely death. The 28-year-old Liverpool forward died in a car crash on Thursday morning alongside his younger brother, Andre. A blown tyre on Jota's Lamborghini reportedly caused the car to veer off the motorway near northern Spain, roll over, and burst into flames.

The brothers were on their way to catch a ferry from Santander to the UK. Diogo was due to rejoin Liverpool for pre-season training-a return to the game he loved so much, just days after celebrating one of the happiest moments of his life: marrying his childhood sweetheart, Rute, in their hometown of Porto on June 22.

It's hard to grasp how quickly life can turn. One moment, Jota was a newlywed, a father, a footballing champion. The next, he was gone.

Trent Alexander-Arnold:“When it's less painful, I want to remember Diogo with a big smile”

Few teammates were as close to Jota during his Liverpool years as Trent Alexander-Arnold. Now at Real Madrid, the England defender joined his current squad for a solemn moment of silence before training at the Club World Cup. A single photo captured the pain in the silence-Trent, head bowed, hands folded, lost in remembrance.

Later, he found the strength to pen an emotional tribute on social media.

"It's so difficult to find the right words when your head and heart are struggling to accept that someone you care so much about has gone," Alexander-Arnold wrote.

"Diogo, your family was your world. They were everything. For Rute, his children, and his parents, all of our hearts are broken. And for Andre as well. Brothers and best friends."

"When it's less painful, I want to remember Diogo with a big smile. So many laughs and happy moments. He was such a great teammate and a true friend."

"Forever number 20. Rest in peace, Diogo."

Trent and Diogo shared five incredible seasons together at Liverpool, combining for 10 goals across 144 matches. But it was the bond off the pitch that meant more-the kind of connection built in dressing rooms, through quiet conversations, in shared dreams and celebrations.

Virgil van Dijk:“We will always be there for your family”

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk also opened his heart in a message that echoed what so many were feeling: disbelief, heartbreak, helplessness.

"Man, I can't believe it, I don't wanna believe it. Absolutely devastated and in total disbelief," Van Dijk began.

"What a human being, what a player, but most importantly what an unbelievable family man."

"You meant so much to all of us and you always will! For your family to lose two sons, a husband and a father is just unimaginable. So cruel and unfair. My heart is breaking for all of your beautiful family, for Rute and for your kids. I promise you that in these difficult times and beyond we will always be there for your family."

"A champion forever, number 20 forever. It's been a privilege to have stood by your side on the pitch, and to have been your friend off it."

"We will miss you beyond words and never forget you. Your legacy will live on, we will make sure of it!"

"Rest in perfect peace Diogo & Andre."

Van Dijk's words reflect more than grief-they carry the collective promise of a football family determined to uphold Jota's memory, and to support those he left behind.

Diogo Jota: More Than a Footballer

Jota wasn't just a top-class forward. He was kind. He was thoughtful. He was a family man. Teammates admired his work ethic, fans adored his flair, and his friends cherished his loyalty.

His death, and that of his brother Andre, has left a void that feels impossible to fill. But as those who loved him have already shown, his spirit lives on-in memories, in stories, and in the bonds that refuse to be broken.

In moments of silence on training grounds, in tearful tributes on social media, and in the hearts of his wife, children, and teammates, Diogo Jota remains.
