Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) has launched a two-day workshop today titled“Supporting the Implementation of the Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) Project”, with participation from representatives of national entities across public and private sectors, technical and advisory institutions, as well as national and international climate experts.
The workshop aims to build national capacity in utilizing Qatar's MRV platform, enhance understanding of its mechanisms, and clarify the responsibilities of relevant stakeholders in data collection and reporting. It also seeks to strengthen institutional cooperation to ensure sustainable climate action across sectors. The event's agenda features training sessions and presentations on the latest methodologies for data collection and analysis, alongside global best practices in MRV systems.
In his opening remarks, Eng. Saad Abdullah Al-Hetmi, Director of the Climate Change Department at MECC, emphasized that this workshop reflects Qatar's firm commitment to climate action and to enhancing national systems in line with its international obligations, particularly under the Paris Agreement.
“A robust national MRV system is a cornerstone for ensuring transparency in climate action,” Al-Hetmi said.“It also enhances our ability to track progress in emission reductions and improve the effectiveness of national climate policies and measures.” He noted that the ministry is continuously working to improve the climate data infrastructure and foster integration across various sectors to ensure coordinated and efficient data sharing.
The workshop is designed to introduce participants to the goals and mechanisms of the MRV platform, build their capacity in using it, and ensure accurate, continuous, and annual data flows. It also highlights the importance of each stakeholder's role within the institutional arrangements of the national MRV system.
Al-Hetmi stressed that the success of the MRV project hinges on strong partnerships and collaboration with national stakeholders in both public and private sectors, along with the adoption of international best practices and technical support from partners.
He expressed hope that the workshop will result in a shared vision and a clear roadmap that will transition the MRV project from planning to practical implementation. He also praised the efforts of the ministry's team and all partners involved in organizing the workshop and developing its content.
