J&K CM Seeks More Coaches, Better Timings For Vande Bharat

(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) Srinagar- Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has written to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, requesting an enhancement of Vande Bharat train services in the Union Territory. The demands include increasing the frequency of the trains, augmenting coach capacity, rescheduling timings for better public convenience, and providing onboard internet connectivity.

In a letter sent last week, Omar Abdullah welcomed the recent launch of the Vande Bharat Express between Katra and Srinagar, describing it as a“landmark initiative” that has brought modern, comfortable, and time-efficient travel to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

However, citing feedback from commuters, stakeholders, and his personal experience travelling on the train, Omar flagged several key concerns that he said merit urgent attention.

Demand for More Coaches

Omar said the current coach configuration of the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express is“proving insufficient” to meet the growing passenger demand-especially during weekends, holidays, and the ongoing tourism and pilgrimage seasons.

“Augmenting the train's capacity by adding chair cars and executive class coaches will go a long way in addressing the passenger surge,” he stated in the letter.

Increase in Frequency

Highlighting the strategic importance of the Katra-Srinagar corridor, Omar urged the Railway Ministry to increase the frequency of the Vande Bharat service to better serve the growing number of commuters and tourists.

“This would greatly benefit local commuters and help unlock the full potential of this vital corridor,” he wrote.

Rescheduling Timings for Same-Day Travel

The Chief Minister also proposed a change in the train's schedule to enable more practical day trips for those travelling for work, education, medical, and pilgrimage purposes.

“It is earnestly requested that the departure from Katra be scheduled in the early morning hours, and the return journey from Srinagar be timed for late evening. This would facilitate same-day return travel and significantly enhance commuter convenience,” Omar added.

Call for Onboard Internet Connectivity

In an additional recommendation, Omar emphasized the need for high-speed onboard internet services, especially given the poor mobile connectivity in several parts of the route, including long tunnels.

“In today's digital age, uninterrupted internet access is a key expectation. Provision of Wi-Fi will improve the overall travel experience, allowing passengers to stay connected for work and entertainment,” he said.
