PARIS, July 2 (KUNA) -- Kuwait is firmly committed towards marine environment protection efforts, an official told the United Nation's cultural agency UNESCO amid talks on Wednesday, citing the country's rich maritime tradition.
Given the importance of the matter, Kuwait has delved into extensive research over the hydrological and chemical changes in the marine environment, Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research's (KISR) coastal and marine resources department chief Dr. Turki Al-Saeed said amid a gathering of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) in the French capital.
Kuwait has ratcheted up investments in a bid to bolster marine environment research through its own designated vessel designed to study scientific data at sea, equipped with modern and cutting-edge technology, he said.
On such data, he said it comprises the physical, chemical and biological factors affecting the marine environment, a field KISR has studied extensively through its own research platforms, the official underlined.
UNESCO's IOC is the only UN body specialized in marine science, promoting international cooperation to improve the management of the ocean, coasts and marine resources. (end)
