(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency)
Amman, July 2 (Petra) – Mayor of Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), Yousef Shawarbeh, on Wednesday welcomed a high-level Syrian delegation, highlighting the municipality's experience in local administration and delivery of "advanced" municipal services.
During his meeting with the governors of Damascus and its countryside and their accompanying technical delegation, Shawarbeh affirmed the municipality's "readiness" to share its expertise with Syria in areas of digital transformation, urban planning, investment, and waste management.
Shawarbeh noted cities face "numerous" challenges and "exceptional" circumstances that require joint efforts to rebuild and develop urban systems.
Shawarbeh highlighted Amman's "rich" expertise in modernizing its operations and building international partnerships, guided by Royal directives that led to the adoption of a strategic plan for 2022–2026, which aligns with national strategies and supports sustainable development goals and global competitiveness indicators.
Governor of Damascus Maher Marwan, in turn, expressed hope that this meeting would mark the beginning of renewed joint cooperation and integration, reflecting the two capitals' shared geography and future.
Marwan also called for expanding partnerships in areas of smart transportation, digital municipal services, modern urban planning, green public spaces, and waste management.
Praising the GAM's achievements in recent years, he described these milestones as a "source of inspiration" for Damascus as it continues its recovery from years of conflict.
He emphasized the importance of leveraging local capabilities and experiences to serve citizens and launch ambitious development projects.
The two-day visit aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation and exchange expertise in urban planning, sustainability, digital services, and infrastructure development, according to a GAM statement.
Concluding their first-day program, the delegation visited the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) station in Tabarbour to learn more about this key project, which represents a "significant" improvement in Amman's public transportation sector.
