Trump Calls Lara Trump Ideal Pick to Succeed Tillis in Senate
(MENAFN) On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump endorsed his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, as a strong contender to replace retiring Senator Thom Tillis in North Carolina’s Senate seat.
Responding to a question about potential candidates to fill Tillis's seat, Trump suggested that Lara would be an ideal pick.
"Somebody that would really be great is Lara. She grew up there," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One while returning from Florida.
The president clarified that while Lara and his son, Eric, now reside in Florida, she remains deeply connected to North Carolina.
"She’s a great person, Lara Trump. I mean, that would always be my first choice, but she doesn’t live there now," Trump said. "But she’s there all the time, her parents are there. You know, she really knows North Carolina well. I won it three times. I don’t know who the candidates are going to be. I think you’ll have one of the congressmen step up and should do very well," he added.
Trump also made a brief remark about Tillis's decision, stating, "I didn't get along with Tillis and he resigned. It's good.”
Tillis, a Republican, surprised many on Sunday by announcing that he would not seek reelection in 2026. His sudden departure followed public disagreements with Trump over the latter’s tax and spending proposals, specifically those involving cuts to health care programs.
