German Federal Police: 6,193 Immigrants Turned Back At Border Since May


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BERLIN, July 2 (KUNA) -- The German Federal Police announced on Wednesday that 6,193 illegal immigrants have been turned back at the border since the new government began tightening inspection procedures on Germany's borders with nine neighboring countries on May 8.
The Federal Police have registered 7,960 unauthorized entries at the German land borders and have immediately rejected or turned back 6,193 people, it said.
According to the police, exceptions exist for people from particularly "vulnerable groups", it has registered 79 asylum requests from these groups.
The previous government began conducting inspections at external borders in December of last year, particularly with Poland and Austria.
Immediately upon assuming office on May 6, the new government began tightening these measures just two days after assuming office, transforming intermittent inspections into a permanent police presence at all border crossings. (end)
