UK Set to Buy Dozen Nuclear-Capable F-35 Jets, Boost NATO Role

(MENAFN) The United Kingdom is set to acquire a minimum of 12 F-35A fighter jets equipped with the capability to carry nuclear weapons and plans to join NATO’s airborne nuclear mission.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to reveal the decision on Wednesday at the NATO summit in the Netherlands, urging member countries to reinforce their commitment to the alliance, according to an official press statement.

While the F-35A jets can deploy conventional armaments, they also have the capacity to be fitted with US-made nuclear bombs if necessary. Developed primarily by US defense contractor Lockheed Martin, this fifth-generation fighter ranks among the most sophisticated and expensive aircraft globally.

"In an era of radical uncertainty, we can no longer take peace for granted, which is why my government is investing in our national security,” Starmer declared.

Downing Street characterized the initiative as "the biggest strengthening of the UK's nuclear posture in a generation."

“The UK’s commitment to NATO is unquestionable, as is the alliance’s contribution to keeping the UK safe and secure,” Starmer said. “But we must all step up to protect the Euro-Atlantic area for generations to come.”

Starmer also highlighted that the deal would support 100 businesses and safeguard 20,000 jobs across the country, ushering in "a new era for our world-leading Royal Air Force."
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte praised the move as "yet another robust British contribution to NATO."
