EU Voices Support for Trump’s Ceasefire Announcement
(MENAFN) The European Union expressed strong approval on Tuesday following the ceasefire announcement between Israel and Iran, declared by US President Donald Trump, describing it as a crucial move toward stabilizing a region fraught with rising tensions.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen took to X to affirm, "Europe welcomes the announcement of a ceasefire by President Trump. It's an important step towards restoring stability in a region in tension. This must be our collective priority."
On Monday, Trump revealed that Israel and Iran had consented to a "Complete" and "Total" ceasefire, concluding what he termed "The 12 DAY War." The conflict ignited on June 13 when Israel launched strikes targeting Iranian nuclear and military sites, to which Iran responded with missile attacks.
The escalation included a US strike on three Iranian nuclear facilities early Sunday, which Washington claims were "completely" destroyed. Iran retaliated by launching a missile assault on the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar Monday evening.
The ceasefire officially began at 0400 GMT Tuesday, with Trump urging strict adherence from both parties.
Von der Leyen further urged Iran to participate "seriously in a credible diplomatic process," emphasizing that only through diplomacy can the ongoing crisis surrounding Tehran's nuclear ambitions be resolved.
