Kremlin declares no quick breakthroughs in US-Russia ties
(MENAFN) Restoring US-Russia relations will be a slow and complex process with no immediate breakthroughs, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday.
Responding to questions from reporters about the current state of Moscow-Washington ties and the impact of the ongoing Ukraine conflict, Peskov acknowledged that major issues remain unresolved. He described the process of normalization as “difficult” and emphasized that while progress is being made, “quick results are unlikely.” He added that diplomatic consultations are ongoing between the two countries' foreign ministries, in line with agreements made by Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.
His comments followed remarks by Russia’s new ambassador to the US, Aleksandr Darchiev, who revealed that talks between the two nations will now be held in Moscow and Washington instead of neutral venues. Darchiev confirmed that another round of discussions will take place soon in the Russian capital.
The ambassador also echoed Peskov’s cautious outlook, saying relations are still far from normal due to entrenched anti-Russian sentiment in US politics. He blamed both elements of the so-called “deep state” and hawkish lawmakers in Congress for impeding progress.
Among Moscow’s key objectives, Darchiev said, are the return of Russian diplomatic properties seized by the US and the restoration of direct flights between the two countries, which have been suspended since the Ukraine conflict escalated in 2022.
Since Donald Trump’s return to office, diplomatic engagement between the US and Russia has resumed, with several rounds of discussions aimed at improving bilateral ties and addressing the Ukraine crisis. Notably, two prisoner exchanges between Russia and Ukraine have occurred since Trump’s inauguration.
