
Air India Plane With At Least 244 People On Board Crashes Near Ahmedabad Airport
An Air India plane crashed at the airport in India's western city of Ahmedabad, television channels reported on Thursday, without specifying whether there were any fatalities.
At least 244 people were on board the flight, consisting of two pilots and 10 cabin crews, as per authorities. The pilot in command was Sumit Sabharwal who was assisted by co-pilot Clive Kunder.
In a statement, Air India revealed that Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident on June 12, 2025.
"At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest on airindia and on our x handle."

The plane, a B787 Dreamliner aircraft, crashed into the residential area of Meghani Nagar after takeoff at 1.38pm, crashing five minutes later, said the Directorate General of Civil Aviation in an official statement.
"There were 232 passengers on board, 230 adults and 2 infants. Crew was 10 plus 2, total 244. Airport emergency team activated. Smoke is evident from a long distance. DAW, ADAW, and one FOI are already in Ahmedabad for another task. They are getting details," it added.
N. Chandrasekaran, the chairman of Air India confirmed the tragic incident. "With profound sorrow I confirm that Air India Flight 171 operating Ahmedabad London Gatwick was involved in a tragic accident today. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by this devastating event. At this moment, our primary focus is on supporting all the affected people and their families. We are doing everything in our power to assist the emergency response teams at the site and to provide all necessary support and care to those impacted."
"Further updates will be shared as we receive more verified information. An emergency centre has been activated and support team have been set up for families seeking information," added the official.
The crash occurred when the aircraft was taking off, the TV channels reported. Visuals showed debris on fire, with thick black smoke rising up into the sky near the airport.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said he had spoken to the Gujarat CM and promised all central assistance.
Visuals showed people being moved in stretchers and being taken away in ambulances.
