Iran Executes 9 Convicted ISIS Fighters

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) Iran has executed nine convicted ISIS fighters involved in a 2018 attack, following a Supreme Court ruling upholding their sentences.

The Iranian judiciary has announced the execution of nine members of the Islamic State (ISIS), who were arrested in connection with a deadly clash in 2018. According to Iran's ISNA news agency, the executions took place after their sentences were upheld by the country's Supreme Court.

The individuals were reportedly captured following an armed confrontation with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the Bamo region of western Iran. The clash resulted in the deaths of three Iranian soldiers and several ISIS fighters.

Following the standoff, Iranian security forces stormed the militants' hideout, arresting at least 18 individuals and seizing a weapons cache. The confiscated arms included a machine gun and more than 50 grenades, highlighting the scale of the planned operations.

The ISNA report did not disclose the identities or nationalities of those executed, nor did it provide details about their legal defense or the length of their detention before execution.

The executions come amid rising concerns about ISIS activity in the region. In September 2023, ISIS-K (Khorasan Province), an affiliate of the group, issued threats against both Iran and Tajikistan, vowing future attacks.

According to regional security analysts, Iran has increasingly stepped up counterterrorism efforts following heightened threats from extremist groups. Tehran views such operations as vital to national security, particularly along its western and eastern borders.

Human rights organizations, however, have criticized the lack of transparency in Iran's judicial process, especially concerning terrorism-related cases. They have raised concerns about fair trials and the use of capital punishment without public access to evidence or legal proceedings.
