Local collaboration to grow between Türkiye, Romania
(MENAFN) Relations between Türkiye and Romania—political, economic, and trade—are expected to gain momentum and regional cooperation is projected to grow following the election of independent candidate and former Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan as Romania’s new president.
An associate professor from Marmara University, Meral Balci, commented on the Romanian elections, explaining that she had the chance to observe the voting process firsthand and described it as a key moment shaping the country’s foreign policy trajectory.
Balci highlighted that Nicusor Dan, an independent, center-right candidate, secured the presidency over far-right, anti-European Union candidate George Simion. “This result shows Romania's will to continue its integration with the EU and NATO,” she added.
She emphasized that Dan’s victory could be seen as a positive step for Türkiye-Romania ties. “Both countries had signed a ‘Strategic Partnership’ agreement in 2011, deepening cooperation in political, economic and security fields. Dan's pro-EU and pro-NATO policies may pave the way for further strengthening of existing cooperation with Türkiye.”
Balci also indicated that new partnerships might emerge, particularly in areas like the defense industry, energy security, and trade. She noted, “Dan's commitments on anti-corruption and rule of law can also encourage the sharing of experience between the two countries, in parallel with similar reform processes in Türkiye.”
