Japan proposes collaboration on LNG with US
(MENAFN) Japan intends to propose a partnership focused on rare earth materials and liquefied natural gas (LNG) as part of ongoing tariff discussions with the United States, aiming to reinforce supply chains strained by escalating US-China tensions.
China has recently placed export restrictions on seven crucial rare earth elements and has halted LNG purchases from the US. By helping to address these challenges, Japan hopes to gain favorable terms concerning American tariffs.
Japan’s lead negotiator for tariffs, Economic Revitalization Minister Ryosei Akazawa, left for Washington on Thursday for a fifth round of negotiations on the US tariff measures.
“We'll continue to strongly urge the United States to review the series of tariff measures,” Akazawa said before his departure from Tokyo.
His visit to the US will last four days and marks his third consecutive week of travel to the country. The aim is to move talks forward ahead of a possible meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and US President Donald Trump, which could take place on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada in mid-June.
