Only US Can Monitor Ceasefire, Says Zelensky

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that only the US can ensure monitoring of the ceasefire, admitting that some European countries may also participate in this process.

The head of state said this at a briefing on June 4, according to a Ukrinform correspondent.

"After the parties agree to a ceasefire, everyone is interested in who will be the guarantor. Who will carry out the mediation mission. The mission to say that this side has violated the ceasefire. Appropriate sanctions for violating the ceasefire. From the very beginning, we said – at the Istanbul-1 and Istanbul-2 meetings – that America could guarantee this monitoring. Whether they involve European partners or not is a technical issue for the US. I think they will agree and they understand that technically only they can fully perform this function," Zelensky said.

According to him, this“gives an understanding of why leaders should meet in this format.” We are talking about high-level negotiations between the presidents of Ukraine, the US , possibly Turkey, and the dictator of the Russian Federation.

"If we agree on a ceasefire, it is, of course, easy to control the range of both sides. It is, of course, very easy to control that missiles are not flying, long-range drones are not flying, and that there are no ships at sea and no attacks on port infrastructure, etc. That is, it is very easy to control technically. It is more difficult to control events on the front line," the President said.

As reported by Ukrinform, earlier on June 4, Zelensky proposed that the Russians cease fire until the leaders meet to discuss establishing peace in Ukraine.
