Srinagar: In a startling case of impersonation and digital fraud, Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested a man for posing as the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Counter Intelligence (CI) Kashmir in a bid to pressure gambling platforms into refunding money he had lost online.

According to officials, the accused-identified as Barkat Ali Parray alias BK, son of Ghulam Mohammad Parray and a resident of Gundhassi Bhat, Sheltang, Srinagar-was found using the photograph of the SSP CI Kashmir as his WhatsApp profile picture. Parray allegedly used this fake identity to threaten individuals, including organisers of online gambling platforms.

CI Kashmir acted on credible intelligence and tracked the suspect through his digital footprint. He was apprehended on June 9 at Jahangir Chowk, Srinagar. During a routine check of his mobile phone, police found that his WhatsApp account, linked to his personal number, featured the SSP's image as the profile picture.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had downloaded the SSP's photo from the internet with the intent to impersonate a police officer,” a police official said.

Further inquiry uncovered that Parray had been involved in online gambling for the past year, actively using platforms like 'Aviator' and '777'. Investigators said he had made advance payments on the '777' platform and later used the impersonated identity to pressure the organisers into refunding the money he had lost.

Authorities are now conducting a deeper analysis of his digital devices to determine if Parray has links to any other criminal or anti-national activities.

Police have urged the public-especially youth-to stay away from online gambling apps, warning that such platforms are often fronts for exploitation and can lead to involvement in illegal or anti-social activities.
