The session focused on safety standards for machinery and electrical equipment and saw participation from over 65 industry representatives.
The event highlighted the growing interest among manufacturers and businesses in aligning with India's evolving technical and safety norms.
Vishal Tomer, Director and Head of BIS Chandigarh, underlined the need for streamlined regulatory frameworks to improve product safety and support global market access.
The OTR 2024 is aimed at strengthening India's regulatory landscape by unifying technical standards across various industrial segments.
Rakesh Kumar, Director at BIS, described it as a landmark move that would ensure consistency and safety across more than 400 products grouped under 90 Indian Standards.
The order applies to 43 categories of machinery, including construction, earthmoving, and mining equipment; textile machinery like looms and embroidery machines; packaging units; thermal treatment equipment; pumps and compressors; and lifting machinery like cranes. All these products will require mandatory BIS certification.
Ajay Maurya, Joint Director at BIS, addressed industry queries related to compliance, noting that manufacturers and importers must secure BIS certification via the Manakonline portal before the regulation comes into force on August 28, 2025.
He added that this is the first time such a comprehensive safety regulation has been introduced in India.
Lokesh Jain, Chairperson and Zonal President of CII Ludhiana, and Tarlochan Singh, President of ALMTI Ludhiana, expressed support for the regulation, reiterating Ludhiana industry's dedication to meeting high safety and quality standards.
