Syria Welcomes EU’s Removal of Sanctions
(MENAFN) Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani expressed gratitude for the European Union’s decision on Tuesday to eliminate economic sanctions against Syria, describing the development as “a new historic achievement” for Syrians.
This milestone, he emphasized, symbolizes a turning point for the nation.
In a message posted on X, al-Shaibani stated, “We, together with our people, have achieved a historic victory through the lifting of EU sanctions on Syria.”
He conveyed appreciation to the EU member countries and all contributors to “this victory,” underscoring the collective effort behind the policy shift.
Al-Shaibani also highlighted that the measure would enhance “security, stability and prosperity in Syria.”
He went on to say that “Syria deserves a bright future worthy of its people and civilization,” reaffirming his hope for national progress and revival.
The announcement came after EU foreign policy head Kaja Kallas declared earlier the same day that, “Today, we took the decision to lift our economic sanctions on Syria. We want to help the Syrian people rebuild a new, inclusive and peaceful Syria,” also via X.
Her remarks pointed to the EU’s intent to support a unified and harmonious reconstruction process.
In related news, the US Treasury Department revealed last week that it is coordinating with the State Department and the National Security Council to enforce orders from Leader Donald Trump concerning the easing of sanctions on Syria.
The United States had initially imposed sanctions in 1979, later tightening them considerably following the onset of the Syrian civil war in 2011.
Meanwhile, Syria’s long-time leader Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia on December 8, effectively bringing an end to the Baath Party’s dominance, which had lasted since 1963.
His departure signifies a dramatic political shift and possibly a new chapter in Syria’s governance.
