Kremlin releases update on suggested Ukraine peace discussions

(MENAFN) The Kremlin has restated Russia’s readiness to engage in direct peace talks with Ukraine, emphasizing President Vladimir Putin’s offer for unconditional negotiations in Istanbul. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday that Moscow remains committed to a diplomatic solution and is serious about achieving a lasting peace.

Putin’s proposal, made on Sunday, invites Ukraine to return to the negotiation table without any preconditions—a process that was abandoned by Kiev in 2022. However, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has insisted that a full ceasefire must precede any talks, stating he is willing to attend the proposed meeting in Türkiye on Thursday, but only if a cessation of hostilities begins immediately.

Peskov acknowledged the call for peace made by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who urged Ukraine to join the talks without delay or conditions. He also noted that many global leaders, including those from former Soviet republics and BRICS nations, support Russia’s diplomatic initiative.

While Moscow has expressed general openness to a ceasefire, it has raised key concerns—particularly that such a pause could give Ukraine the opportunity to reorganize and continue mobilizing its forces. Russia also insists that any ceasefire must be accompanied by a suspension of Western weapons deliveries to Ukraine.

Peskov concluded that Türkiye is prepared to host the discussions, and that Russia is committed to working toward a comprehensive and sustainable peace agreement.
