Russia announces POW exchange with Ukraine
(MENAFN) Russia and Ukraine have carried out a prisoner of war exchange, with both sides repatriating 205 combatants, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. The swap, which took place on Tuesday, was facilitated by the United Arab Emirates. The released Russian soldiers have been taken to Belarus, where they are receiving medical care and will soon be sent back to Russia for rehabilitation.
Prisoner exchanges between Russia and Ukraine are conducted regularly, with neutral countries helping to organize the transfers. The last swap occurred in mid-April, when each side released 246 individuals.
This exchange comes just days before Russia’s unilateral three-day ceasefire, which will coincide with the observance of Victory Day, marking the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany. Ukraine has rejected the ceasefire proposal, instead demanding an unconditional 30-day truce.
Ukrainian President Zelensky has threatened foreign dignitaries attending Moscow's Victory Day military parade, stating that his government would not guarantee their safety. In response, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Zelensky's remarks would not impact Russia's plans, as the military is prepared to respond to any provocations.
