PHCC Marks World Family Doctor Day Monday
(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) is set to observe World Family Doctor Day Monday.
This event is commemorated globally each year on May 19, in recognition of the pivotal role this medical specialty plays in advancing the health and well-being of individuals and communities alike.
Family physicians in the State of Qatar represent one of the foremost pillars of PHCC who provide sustained and comprehensive healthcare that helps mitigate the burdens on hospitals and improve the quality of life of both citizens and residents.
Consultant in Family Medicine at PHCC, Dr. Musa Basheer Mansour, highlighted that, since 2013, the corporation has adopted the family medicine approach as part of its strategic vision, in commensuration with the Qatar National Vision 2030 goals of offering an integrated and sustainable health system.
The merits of family medicine include the provision of comprehensive healthcare in terms of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, in addition to consistently enhancing the relationship between physicians and patients, thereby bolstering patient trust and facilitating comprehensive tracking of personal and familial medical history, Dr. Mansour noted.
Dr. Mansour added that family physicians pursue an inclusive approach that takes into account multiple facets of patient life, in coordination with other medical specialties when necessary.
They perform a pivotal role in managing chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, providing preventive care such as vaccinations and periodic testing, in addition to detecting cancers, and at the end of the day they reduce the rates of medical complications and mortalities, Dr. Mansour said.
He added that family medicine cost-effectively helps reduce health burdens through prevention and early detection, thereby reducing unnecessary referrals to tertiary care facilities, as current reports indicate that over 60% of chronic disease cases are now being effectively managed within healthcare centers, with patient satisfaction rates exceeding 85%.
Family Medicine Consultant at PHCC, Dr. Mohammed Al Allaq, affirmed that family medicine is not an alternative to other medical specialties, but rather the core pillar among them, performing the role of guidance and follow-up and contributing to optimizing healthcare results through regularly handling chronic cases and executing patient follow-up.
PHCC marks this day annually by staging a variety of events to spotlight the role played by family physicians in the health system and encourage community members to constantly reach out to their physicians.
