Worn-Out Banknotes Worth 843M Afs Set Alight In North
KABUL (Pajhwok): The central bank has torched old banknotes worth 843.430 million afghanis in the northern zone.
In a statement, Da Afghanistan Bank (DAB) said the move was made to facilitate financial transactions and to remove damaged banknotes from circulation.
The statement noted that the burnt banknotes included all denominations.
Mullah Mohammad Akhund, first deputy head of the central bank, said the central bank regularly collected old banknotes from the market and replaced them with new and intact ones to ease monetary transactions for the public.
He urged people to take proper care of afghani banknotes to prevent them from becoming prematurely damaged and to avoid the costs associated with reprinting them.
According to the statement, the collection and removal of old banknotes was ongoing across all zones of the country. Citizens holding old banknotes are encouraged to visit branches of Da Afghanistan Bank or commercial banks to exchange them for new and usable ones.
Earlier, DAB burned worn-out banknotes worth 660.700 million in western Herat province.
