Explosion murders Russian general
(MENAFN) Russian authorities have confirmed the death of Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, a two-star general and deputy chief of operations for the General Staff, in a car bombing on Friday morning. The attack occurred in Balashikha, a suburb of Moscow.
According to Russia’s Investigative Committee, the explosive device was planted inside the vehicle and was designed for maximum lethality, containing metal fragments. Investigators estimated the blast had the power equivalent to 300 grams of TNT.
Footage taken by witnesses shows the car, parked among others near a residential high-rise, engulfed in flames following the explosion.
This assassination follows a similar high-profile attack last December, in which Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov—then commander of Russia’s Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Defense Forces—was killed in a blast also attributed to Ukrainian intelligence. That operation used an explosive hidden in an electric scooter and was remotely detonated using surveillance from a parked vehicle.
These incidents mark an escalating pattern of targeted attacks against senior Russian military officials.
