EU Urges Dialogue Between India, Pakistan
(MENAFN) On Thursday, the European Union strongly denounced a recent violent incident in the Indian-controlled region of Kashmir.
It appealed to both India and Pakistan to act with caution and pursue peaceful discussions to prevent any further deterioration of the situation.
Representing the EU and its 27 member nations, foreign policy leader Kaja Kallas issued a declaration stating that the union "unequivocally condemns the heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April and the murder of innocent civilians."
The statement further reiterated that "terrorism can never be justified," stressing the importance of holding perpetrators accountable.
Highlighting each nation’s legitimate authority and responsibility to defend its people from terrorism through lawful avenues, the EU also voiced serious worry about the escalating strain in the area.
It noted, "The EU is monitoring closely and with great concern the growing tensions in the region and the ensuing consequences, including the possible loss of more lives."
The EU appealed to both nations to "exercise restraint, to de-escalate tensions and desist from further attacks to safeguard civilian lives on both sides," and encouraged a renewed push to restore diplomatic communications.
It underscored the necessity for both countries to uphold their "obligations under international law and take all measures possible to protect civilian lives."
These comments come against a backdrop of mounting conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbors, following a series of strikes by India on multiple targets within Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
