Flamengo’S Draw In Argentina Threatens Libertadores Campaign

(MENAFN- The Rio Times) According to official match reports, Flamengo drew 1–1 with Central Córdoba in Santiago del Estero on May 7. The result extended their winless Libertadores streak to three matches.

Flamengo remains third in Group C with five points, while Central Córdoba rises to eight as group runners-up. LDU Quito leads Group C with eight points and a superior goal difference.

Giorgian De Arrascaeta scored in the ninth minute after combining with Gerson, giving Flamengo an early lead. Central Córdoba responded in the 60th minute when Gastón Verón headed in a precise Angulo cross.

Flamengo logged 56 percent possession and completed 83 percent of their passes, yet misfired 84 passes overall. Flamengo controlled 56 percent of possession but struggled in the final third, completing only 25 of 49 passes in opponent half.

They missed a penalty that could have won the game after VAR intervention overturned the call. Central Córdoba managed seven shots, four on target, and forced key saves from goalkeeper Agustín Rossi.

They defended with discipline, absorbed pressure, and targeted Flamengo's right flank on counters. They created four big chances and finished with four shots on target out of seven attempts.
Financial Stakes and Strategic Implications Shape Flamengo
The draw yields roughly $300,000 in prize money and boosts Central Córdoba's international profile, attracting potential investors. The match drew 18,457 spectators, generating significant gate receipts for Central Córdoba.

Central Córdoba, competing in their first Libertadores campaign, impressed after defeating Flamengo at the Maracanã earlier in the group stage. Their disciplined counterattacks and compact defense yield high chances of advancing and boost their club profile and revenue streams.

The draw leaves Flamengo needing victories in their final two matches to secure knockout qualification and associated revenue. Failure to advance would relegate them to the Copa Sudamericana, cutting continental broadcast and sponsorship income.

Flamengo, facing possible Sudamericana play, risks losing millions in broadcast and sponsorship revenue. Flamengo invests heavily in player salaries and youth development to sustain its commercial model.

In addition, Flamengo ranks among Latin America's top clubs in sponsorship revenue and social media engagement. Broadcasters report average viewership of 6.5 million for Flamengo group matches, highlighting their commercial value.

Each group stage result carries pre-set prize money that influences club budget planning. Coach Filipe Luís highlighted fatigue and travel demands but refused to use them as excuses.

He urged his squad to improve pressing and final-third efficiency to revive their Libertadores campaign. He promised a more intense training block ahead of the LDU match.

Flamengo hosts LDU Quito at the Maracanã on May 15, then faces Deportivo Táchira on May 22. Those results will determine whether Flamengo maintains its continental ambitions and preserves its commercial interests.
