Zelensky replaces head of Ukraine’s general staff

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the assignment of Major General Andrii Hnatov as head of the general staff of the military forces, succeeding Lieutenant General Anatolii Barhylevych.

While the decrees confirming Barhylevych’s dismissal and Hnatov’s assignment were made public, they did not specify the motives behind the decision.

In a statement on Facebook, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov explained that the restructuring within the armed forces aims to improve operational effectiveness.

He emphasized that Hnatov brings over 27 years of experience, having previously served as the commander of a marine brigade, led Operational Command East, and directed the Joint Forces of Ukraine’s military.

The Defense Ministry confirmed that Barhylevych will now serve as head inspector, responsible for enforcing military standards and maintaining discipline within the armed forces.

Having assumed the position in February 2024, Barhylevych held the role of chief of the general staff until his recent transfer.
