Terrorists perform fatal assault on hotel in Somalia
(MENAFN) Gunmen from the Al-Shabaab terrorist group launched a deadly assault on the Cairo Hotel in Beledweyne, central Somalia, where government officials and local leaders had gathered to discuss military operations against the jihadist group, multiple news agencies reported.
Reports on the death toll vary. A witness told the Associated Press that 11 people, including three of his relatives, were killed. Reuters, citing clan elder Abdullahi Fidow, reported at least seven deaths. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack and alleged that more than ten people had been killed.
According to Somali Guardian, the assault began with a car bomb explosion at the hotel entrance, followed by armed militants storming the building, triggering an intense battle with security forces. Videos circulating on social media show thick smoke and severe damage to the facility.
After more than 24 hours of fighting, Somali troops, along with Ethiopian and Djiboutian allies, regained control of the building, Universal Somali TV reported on Wednesday.
Al-Shabaab’s Ongoing Terrorism in Somalia
Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda-affiliated group, remains one of Somalia’s most dangerous terrorist organizations, frequently targeting civilians and military infrastructure to destabilize the government. Though African Union forces expelled the group from Mogadishu in 2011, it still controls parts of southern and central Somalia.
The attack follows previous deadly incidents, including:
•August 2024: Over 30 people killed in a terrorist attack on Lido Beach, Mogadishu.
•October 2022: Twin car bombings in Mogadishu, killing over 100 and injuring 300.
Last month, US President Donald Trump ordered airstrikes in Somalia’s Bari region, targeting an unnamed senior ISIS planner and other militants. The operation reportedly destroyed terrorist hideouts and killed multiple fighters.
Security forces remain on high alert as Somalia continues to battle Al-Shabaab’s insurgency.
