Media reports US requesting from EU eggs

(MENAFN) The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has reached out to egg producers in several European countries to secure additional imports as domestic prices surge, Reuters reported on Friday, citing the Danish egg association.

Despite ongoing trade tensions between Washington and Brussels over recent US tariffs on EU goods, a USDA representative in Europe reportedly sent formal inquiries in late February to major egg-producing nations, including Denmark, Sweden, and Finland.

US wholesale egg prices recently hit a record high of $8.41 per dozen, marking a more than 200% increase from the previous year, Bloomberg reported. The price spike is largely attributed to a worsening bird flu outbreak that has significantly reduced the supply of eggs.

In a follow-up letter reviewed by Reuters, US officials asked Danish producers for an estimate of how many eggs could be supplied, assuming they met all import requirements. The request indicates that the White House is assessing potential import quantities to address the domestic shortage.

A spokesperson for the Danish egg association acknowledged the request but noted that Europe itself faces an egg shortage due to rising global consumption and the spread of bird flu. Meeting US hygiene and regulatory standards could also pose challenges, the representative added.

Jorgen Nyberg Larsen, an industry official in Denmark, confirmed that US authorities had also contacted egg producers in the Netherlands, Sweden, and Finland to explore supply options.

Meanwhile, the US Justice Department has reportedly launched a preliminary investigation into the surge in egg prices, examining whether major suppliers, such as Cal-Maine Foods and Rose Acre Farms, engaged in price-fixing or supply restrictions.

The USDA’s request for egg imports comes just days after Trump’s administration imposed a 25% tariff on EU steel and aluminum imports. In response, the European Commission announced countermeasures, set to take effect in April, targeting $28 billion worth of American goods.
