Trump explains Ukraine envoy’s responsibilities

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has named retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg as his special envoy to Ukraine, clarifying his role amid speculation that Russia had pushed for his exclusion from peace negotiations.

“I am pleased to inform you that General Keith Kellogg has been appointed Special Envoy to Ukraine,” Trump announced on Truth Social on Saturday. He emphasized that Kellogg would lead direct talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and other senior officials, noting their strong working relationship.

Reports from NBC News and Reuters earlier suggested that Russian officials had requested Kellogg’s removal from peace talks due to his pro-Kiev stance. The retired general was notably absent from last month’s US-Russia discussions in Saudi Arabia and this week’s US-Ukraine negotiations in Jeddah, where a proposed 30-day ceasefire was discussed.

On Thursday, US envoy Steve Witkoff traveled to Moscow to present the ceasefire proposal to Russian officials. Trump described Witkoff’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin as “very good and productive.”

Putin expressed openness to the ceasefire but raised concerns about its implementation. He also reiterated his offer for encircled Ukrainian forces in Russia’s Kursk Region to surrender, guaranteeing their safety and humane treatment.

Regarding US-Russia relations, Putin acknowledged Trump’s efforts to mend ties that had been severely damaged under the previous American administration, but noted that progress remained difficult.
