Amman, Feb 26 (Petra) – Minister of Industry, Trade, and Supply, Yarub Qudah, said the government has implemented various measures to maintain market stability, strengthen food reserves, and ensure price stability in preparation for the holy month of Ramadan, when demand and consumption typically surge.
Speaking at a meeting on Wednesday attended by Agriculture Minister Khaled Hneifat, senior government officials, and representatives from industrial, trade, and production sectors, Qudah announced the extension of last year's decision to exempt shipping fees from customs duties and general and special sales taxes for an additional three months.
He also noted that the government has extended a directive issued early last year, which mandates the Jordan Silos and Supply General Company to offer preferential storage rates for private sector importers of essential commodities until the end of Ramadan. The move aims to mitigate inflationary pressures and positively impact consumer prices.
The minister said the reduction in storage costs has reached approximately 40%, helping ease financial burdens on the private sector and contributing to price stability.
Authorities have been directed to expedite customs clearance for imported goods to maintain high stock levels, with the average reserve of essential food items currently covering five months. Supply chains, he added, remain fully operational.
Qudah reaffirmed the availability of locally produced and imported food supplies, emphasizing the ministry's close coordination with the private sector to ensure market stability. He also highlighted intensified market inspections during Ramadan, with monitoring teams operating in three shifts daily and responding swiftly to consumer complaints via digital platforms.
Additionally, he noted that container traffic at the Port of Aqaba increased by 50% in January compared to the same month last year.
The minister underscored the importance of public-private collaboration in sustaining adequate stock levels, stabilizing prices, and preventing market disruptions. He also praised the role of the Civil and Military Consumer Corporations in reinforcing food reserves and price stability, emphasizing the government's support for these institutions to ease financial burdens on citizens.
Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan recently reviewed operations at both corporations and instructed them to secure sufficient stockpiles of essential goods, particularly for Ramadan. Qudah also announced plans for further field visits to markets, following an inspection of Amman's central vegetable market on Tuesday.
For his part, Agriculture Minister Khaled Hneifat stated that agricultural production is currently at its peak, with supply significantly exceeding demand. He pointed out that the primary challenge remains the sharp rise in consumer demand during the first week of Ramadan, followed by a return to normal levels in subsequent weeks.
Secretary-General of the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Supply, Dana Zoubi, said early preparations for Ramadan have been made in coordination with stakeholders from both the public and private sectors to boost food reserves and meet increased demand.
She assured that food stock levels exceed the required safety thresholds, highlighting key reserves: 70,000 tons of sugar, 80,000 tons of rice, 40,000 tons of vegetable oils, and a 30% increase in local poultry production due to joint efforts by the ministries of industry, trade, and agriculture. The poultry supply will include 23 million chickens per month, covering fresh and frozen products.
The ministry is working on multiple fronts to stabilize markets and prices, closely monitoring supply chains, and intensifying inspections, particularly during this critical period.
Meeting participants, including representatives from the trade and agriculture sectors as well as poultry producers, discussed market preparations for Ramadan, emphasizing the availability of locally produced and imported goods and their commitment to price stability.
