Nigeria voces remarks on possible Putin-Trump meeting

(MENAFN) Nigeria has expressed support for a potential meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, viewing it as a valuable opportunity to reduce tensions. In an interview during the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Nigeria's Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar emphasized the importance of dialogue between global powers. He stated that such a meeting could help resolve conflicts, which would be welcomed by peace-minded people worldwide.

Plans for the summit come after initial phone talks between Putin and Trump, focused on resolving the Ukraine conflict. Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and top foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov, are set to meet with American counterparts in Riyadh to prepare for the face-to-face meeting. The potential summit aligns with Trump’s campaign promises to quickly address the Ukraine situation, with talks of a ceasefire and a peace plan being discussed. Despite sanctions imposed on Russia by the West, African nations, including South Africa, have pursued non-alignment while working toward a ceasefire resolution in the conflict.
