Moscow firmly states Ukraine cannot become NATO member

(MENAFN) Russia has firmly stated that Ukraine's potential membership in NATO remains unacceptable, warning that it would pose significant security threats to Russia and could lead to disastrous consequences for Europe. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova emphasized that verbal assurances against Ukraine’s NATO accession are insufficient and called on the alliance to revoke the commitments made to Ukraine during the 2008 NATO summit in Bucharest, where Ukraine and Georgia were promised future membership.

Zakharova argued that the issue of Ukraine's NATO ambitions continues to poison relations in Europe. She referred to the 2008 summit as a provocative moment towards Moscow. Despite NATO's recent statements that Ukraine is on an “irreversible” path to membership, no clear timeline has been set, and the alliance has emphasized that Ukraine must first resolve its conflict with Russia.

US President Donald Trump also recently indicated his opposition to Ukraine joining NATO, suggesting it would be impractical as part of a peace deal with Moscow. Trump and his defense secretary have argued that Ukraine’s NATO ambitions are unrealistic, noting that the territory lost to Russia over the past decade is unlikely to be reclaimed. Moscow has repeatedly opposed NATO's eastward expansion, viewing it as a direct threat to its national security and a major factor in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. The Kremlin insists that Ukraine adopt neutral status for any potential peace agreement to proceed.
