White House praises ‘monumental’ discussions with Moscow

(MENAFN) The White House has described the recent US-Russia negotiations in Riyadh as a "monumental step" towards resolving the Ukraine conflict. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt emphasized the importance of the talks, which were led by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. These discussions aimed to pave the way for a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine, while also working on the normalization of US-Russia relations, which had been largely frozen under the Biden administration's strategy to isolate Moscow.

Leavitt criticized former President Joe Biden's approach, accusing him of neglecting diplomacy in favor of pressuring Russia. The Biden administration had imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia in response to the conflict in Ukraine, and diplomatic relations between the two countries had been minimal for the past three years.

During the 4.5-hour talks, Lavrov stated that both sides agreed to work towards the gradual restoration of diplomatic ties and the removal of barriers put in place by the Biden administration.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian and EU officials expressed surprise at the talks in Riyadh, especially with the absence of Ukrainian involvement. Ukrainian President Zelensky voiced frustration at the negotiations, insisting that no settlement would be accepted without Ukraine's participation. However, Trump defended the talks, stating that Ukraine had missed opportunities for a more favorable deal with Russia when the conflict first escalated in 2022.

The US is continuing to engage with its European allies and Ukraine, ensuring all parties are heard in future discussions. Russia has made it clear that any resolution must address the root causes of the conflict, including NATO's expansion and Ukraine's aspirations to join the alliance.
