Hundreds of Liberian representatives get suspended in major anti-corruption drive

(MENAFN) Liberian President Joseph Nyumah Boakai has suspended more than 450 high-ranking government officials, including ambassadors to the US, UK, and the UN, for failing to declare their assets to the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC). The suspension, which will last for one month or until the officials submit the required declarations, was announced in a press release from the president’s office on Thursday. Boakai emphasized that asset declarations are not only a legal requirement but also a crucial step to restore public trust and promote transparency in government.

The suspension affects a wide range of public servants, including members of the Executive Mansion, ministers of education and health, budget ministers, and special envoys for tourism and investment. The LACC published the list of the 457 affected officials on Wednesday.

Boakai, who assumed office in January after defeating former president George Weah in the November 2023 runoff, has pledged to address poverty and corruption during his six-year term to restore the nation’s hope. Last year, protests broke out in Liberia’s capital, Monrovia, following corruption allegations against the speaker of parliament. In December, a fire destroyed the legislative chamber, and police interrogated Speaker Jonathan Fonati Koffa and others.

Liberia, Africa’s oldest republic, ranked 135th out of 180 countries in Transparency International's latest Corruption Perceptions Index, with a score of 27 out of 100. However, the country has made progress, improving its score by two points from 2023. The Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia noted that this marks the first improvement in seven years, while the LACC acknowledged that more work remains to be done in the fight against corruption.
