Ex-Mauritius Premier gets detained

(MENAFN) Former Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Jugnauth, has been arrested on money laundering charges, as announced by the country's Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) on Sunday. His arrest followed a day after investigators conducted searches at his home and other locations, seizing 114 million Mauritius rupees ($2.4 million).

The FCC confirmed that Jugnauth would be detained at Moka Detention Centre. However, Jugnauth denies the allegations, with his lawyer, Raouf Gulbul, stating that he would provide the required bonds set by the court after being briefly detained.

Jugnauth, who served as the Prime Minister from 2017 until his defeat in the November election, faced accusations of corruption following the leak of recordings involving politicians and business figures. The newly elected Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, has criticized the handling of the economy by the previous administration, prompting audits and further scrutiny of financial practices.
