Israel Withdraws From Most Of Southern Lebanon Under Ceasefire Deal

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) media reports indicate that the Israeli military has withdrawn from most villages in southern Lebanon, except for five locations, under a ceasefire agreement brokered by the U.S. and France. The withdrawal was part of efforts to reduce tensions in the region.

Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported on Tuesday, February 18, citing a senior Lebanese official, that Israeli forces have left most of southern Lebanon, except for five locations. The Lebanese army is expected to gradually take control of the region as part of the agreement.

The full withdrawal of Israeli forces was a key condition of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon. However, according to Al Jazeera, the Israeli military has confirmed that its forces will remain in five locations in southern Lebanon due to strategic reasons.

Nadav Shoshani, spokesperson for the Israeli military, stated on Monday that these five locations hold strategic advantages or are positioned near northern Israeli communities. He emphasized that Israel must maintain its presence in these areas to protect Israeli citizens until security conditions allow a full handover to the Lebanese armed forces.

Following concerns over Israel's commitment to the ceasefire and the deadline for a complete withdrawal, AFP reported that most Israeli soldiers have now left southern Lebanon. However, the Lebanese army has yet to fully deploy in these areas due to security risks.

Reports indicate that Israeli troops have withdrawn from all border villages, except for five locations. The Lebanese army will gradually move into these areas, but unexploded ordnance poses challenges to immediate deployment and full control.

The ceasefire agreement was meant to ensure a stable security transition in southern Lebanon. However, the presence of Israeli forces in certain areas continues to raise concerns about the full implementation of the deal.

The situation in southern Lebanon remains uncertain, with both sides watching developments closely. The success of the ceasefire will depend on Israel's complete withdrawal, the Lebanese army's ability to secure the region, and continued diplomatic efforts to prevent further conflict.
