S-Korea prohibits DeepSeek
(MENAFN) South Korea's national data protection authority has announced a temporary suspension of the popular DeepSeek AI service while it reviews the Chinese startup's data collection practices. The Personal Information Protection Commission of South Korea stated on Monday that DeepSeek's applications were removed from local app stores, and its web service was suspended as of 6pm on Saturday. The suspension will remain until the company ensures compliance with local laws.
While the app remains accessible to users who had already downloaded it, the watchdog has strongly advised them to use the service cautiously until the review is completed.
DeepSeek, a Hangzhou-based company, gained attention in January when it released an open-source version of its reasoning AI model, R1. The model was developed at a lower cost but offers performance similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. DeepSeek offers its services for free, making it widely accessible, unlike competitors that charge for advanced features.
However, concerns have been raised about DeepSeek’s data collection practices, as user data is processed through the company’s servers in China. This has prompted various governments and businesses, including those in the US and Italy, to restrict access to DeepSeek while investigations continue. South Korea had previously requested the company to clarify its data management practices and appoint a local representative to cooperate with the review.
