UK PM announces country ‘ready’ to send troops to Ukraine
(MENAFN) UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has declared that the UK is prepared to take a leading role in providing security guarantees to Ukraine and may deploy British troops as part of a peacekeeping mission if a ceasefire is reached with Russia. In an article for The Telegraph, Starmer emphasized the importance of the Ukraine conflict as a pivotal moment for Europe, describing it as an “existential” issue.
Starmer noted that the UK would be willing to contribute troops to Ukraine’s security if necessary, but acknowledged the heavy responsibility involved in sending British personnel into potential danger. He stressed that ensuring Ukraine's security would also help safeguard Europe's and the UK's security.
The announcement follows rising concerns about the future of US defense commitments in Europe and comes ahead of emergency talks between European leaders in Paris, called in response to US President Donald Trump's push for a peace agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump’s recent discussions with Putin have led to questions being circulated among NATO allies about their readiness to contribute to long-term security arrangements for Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has requested at least 200,000 European peacekeepers to enforce a peace deal, although some analysts believe even deploying 40,000 troops would be a significant challenge. The US, under the Trump administration, has indicated its intention to reduce its involvement and shift the responsibility for supporting Ukraine to European allies.
Russia has warned that any peacekeeping forces entering Ukraine without Moscow's consent would be treated as military targets.
