Macron calls for urgent summit following Ukraine peace discussions
(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel macron has called for an urgent summit of European leaders following the announcement that Moscow and Washington will hold peace talks on Ukraine in Saudi Arabia, excluding the EU from the discussions. The call came after a phone conversation between US President Donald trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, marking their first direct communication since the Ukraine conflict escalated in February 2022.
On Saturday, top diplomats from both countries continued their discussions to prepare for a potential high-level summit between Trump and Putin. US Special Envoy Keith Kellogg later confirmed that EU nations would not be part of the peace negotiations.
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski expressed support for Macron's initiative, confirming that the summit would be held in Paris on Monday. He welcomed the call for unity, with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expected to attend to show solidarity. Although the full list of invitees was not disclosed, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is also expected to participate.
Macron has previously advocated for EU involvement in the peace process, emphasizing that Ukraine should lead talks on its sovereignty while the EU plays a crucial role in ensuring security guarantees and the broader security framework for the region.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, who had previously prohibited direct negotiations with Putin, acknowledged that Ukraine was also excluded from the Saudi talks. He expressed concern about not being part of the discussions, noting, “Maybe there is something at the table, but not on our table.”
