Russian national between captives gets freed by Hamas
(MENAFN) Hamas has released three hostages, including a Russian-Israeli dual citizen, Aleksander Trufanov, as part of an ongoing ceasefire agreement with Israel. The other two hostages are Sagui Dekel-Chen, a dual US-Israeli citizen, and Yair Horn, a dual Argentinian-Israeli citizen. They have been handed over to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and will undergo a medical assessment upon returning to Israeli territory.
In January, Russian President Vladimir Putin called on the Foreign Ministry and relevant agencies to secure Trufanov’s release. Russian diplomats had previously been assured by Hamas that Trufanov would be freed. At the time of his capture, Trufanov had been injured, and his condition was described as unsatisfactory.
Hamas released Trufanov at Russia's request, marking a diplomatic gesture of respect for Russia's stance on a just resolution to the Middle East conflict. This is the latest development in a series of hostage exchanges under the current ceasefire, which began on January 19. As of now, 21 hostages have been freed by Hamas, with Israel releasing over 730 Palestinian prisoners in return.
The hostages were originally captured during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack, which resulted in the deaths of about 1,200 people. Trufanov’s family, originally from Russia, was also impacted by the attack. His father was killed, while his grandmother, mother, and girlfriend were released as part of an earlier truce agreement.
