Ukrainian F-16 gets shot down by accident

(MENAFN) A recent crash involving a Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet, which killed pilot Aleksey Mes, may have been the result of friendly fire, according to a column in The Wall Street Journal on Friday. The crash occurred in late August while the jet was reportedly repelling a Russian missile attack. Ukrainian officials initially did not suggest friendly fire, but an ongoing investigation is raising new concerns.

The article by columnist Jillian Kay Melchior suggests that the downing was linked to Ukraine’s western-provided Patriot air defense system, which may have mistakenly targeted the F-16 due to the absence of critical coordination technology. This technology, known as Link 16, helps air defense systems distinguish between friendly and enemy aircraft. Despite its importance, the Biden administration did not equip Ukraine’s F-16s or Patriot systems with Link 16, potentially leading to the tragic accident.

The F-16s, provided by Denmark and the Netherlands, were intended to be a game-changer for Ukraine's air force but have faced limitations due to outdated radar systems and missing technology. The August crash was the first reported loss of an F-16.
