Hungarian FM claims European pro-conflict elites want to disrupt Ukraine peace
(MENAFN) Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has expressed cautious optimism about the possibility of peace in Ukraine, despite warning that European "pro-war" elites may try to undermine the process. In an interview with Hungarian broadcaster DTV on Friday, Szijjarto highlighted recent discussions between US President Donald trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which he believes have brought the prospect of peace closer than ever before.
While acknowledging that the path to peace may not be easy, Szijjarto emphasized that strong US leadership could help overcome resistance from European liberal elites who may oppose a peace deal. He also referred to the recent phone call between Trump and Putin, the first high-level conversation between the two since the conflict began. The two leaders spoke for nearly 90 minutes and agreed to meet in person soon, possibly in Saudi Arabia, with the Saudi government expressing support for the summit.
Szijjarto's comments reflect growing hopes for peace, even as he anticipates obstacles from factions in Europe that may wish to prolong the conflict.
