Media reports Trump freezing all National Endowment for Democracy funding
(MENAFN) The trump administration has frozen all funding to the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), triggering a financial crisis within the organization, which is now unable to pay its staff or meet other financial obligations. The NED, created in 1983 to support Democratic initiatives globally, has been criticized for allegedly influencing Political outcomes and acting similarly to the CIA, particularly in efforts to overthrow foreign governments.
Elon Musk, heading Trump’s Department of government Efficiency (DOGE), has been vocal in his criticism of the NED, calling it a “scam” and an “evil organization” that should be dissolved. Since Musk’s intervention, the NED has reportedly faced severe financial difficulties, with sources describing the situation as a “bloodbath.”
The NED has long faced scrutiny for its role in promoting political movements aimed at destabilizing sovereign governments. A recent policy paper by the Center for Renewing America, a think tank led by Russell Vought, accused the NED of funding anti-Russian groups in Ukraine and advancing revolutions that contributed to the Ukraine-Russia conflict. The paper also highlighted the NED’s involvement in supporting political opposition in countries like Belarus, Georgia, and Egypt.
This funding freeze is part of broader efforts by the Trump administration to reduce foreign spending, including cuts to the US Agency for International Development (USAID), which Trump has also criticized for its political involvement abroad.
