Belarus frees US national

(MENAFN) The Belarusian government has released three individuals from prison, including an American citizen, as confirmed by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. This release is part of a broader high-profile prisoner exchange between the US and Russia. The identity of the American citizen has not been revealed, as the individual chose to remain anonymous, according to Adam Boehler, the US special envoy for hostages.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty identified one of the released detainees as its journalist, Andrey Kuznechyk, who had been detained in November 2021 on charges related to an “extremist group.” The third person released, activist Alena Maushuk, was arrested for participating in protests following the 2020 Belarusian presidential election, which opposition groups claimed was marred by fraud. Maushuk was convicted of “mass disorder” and has three children.

US Ambassador to Lithuania Kara McDonald confirmed that the three individuals were transferred to Lithuania after their release. This development follows the return of American schoolteacher Marc Fogel, who was freed from Russian detention after being sentenced to 14 years in prison on drug trafficking charges. In exchange for Fogel’s release, the US agreed to free Russian national Aleksandr Vinnik, who was accused of money laundering, identity theft, and drug trafficking, as well as forfeiting $100 million as part of the deal.
