In an interview with Politico on Saturday, February 15, Orbán reflected on the EU's involvement in Afghanistan, calling it a“tough and costly engagement with no exit plan.” He also drew a parallel to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Orbán mentioned that if U.S. President Donald trump could not find a solution, the war in Ukraine could easily turn into another Afghanistan for the EU. He emphasized that the EU could face a similar long-term conflict with no end in sight.

Previously, President Trump had remarked during his election campaign that if the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, which he described as“disastrous and shameful” under President Biden, had not occurred, Russia would not have invaded Ukraine.
