Trump Says US Will Extradite Mumbai 2008 Terror Attack Suspect To India
Trump did not disclose the identity of the suspect but Reuters reported that the individual is a Canadian-Pakistani citizen. The U.S. president made the announcement after a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House.
In a joint press conference, Trump expressed his satisfaction in confirming the extradition of one of the masterminds behind the horrific Mumbai terror attacks, stating that this person would face justice in India.
The 2008 Mumbai attacks, carried out by four armed groups, targeted luxury hotels, train stations, and a Jewish center. The attack resulted in 166 deaths and over 300 injuries, lasting three days.
India has stated that the attacks were carried out by the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba group, though Pakistan denied involvement at the time. Reports indicate that the suspect being extradited is Tahawwur Rana, a Canadian-Pakistani businessman who was previously sentenced to 14 years in prison in the U.S. for supporting Lashkar-e-Taiba.
This move strengthens the U.S.-India relationship as both countries work together to combat terrorism. The extradition is a significant step in holding individuals accountable for their involvement in international terrorism, demonstrating a shared commitment to justice and security.
