PM Modi On Gautam Adani Bribery Case During US Visit: 'Every Indian Is Mine, Never Discussed...'

(MENAFN- Live Mint) Prime Minister Narendra Modi was asked about bribery allegations against businessman Gautam Adani and if anything was discussed with US President Donald Trump during his meeting with him. Responding to the questions, PM Modi said two prominent leaders of two countries never discuss individual issues, while emphasing that“every Indian is mine.”

PM Modi said,“India is a democracy and our culture is 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam', we consider the whole world as one family. I believe every Indian is mine. Two prominent leaders of two countries never discuss such individual issues.”

The Department of Justice under President Joe Biden charged Gautam Adani for allegedly being part of a scheme to pay over USD 250 million (about ₹2,100 crore) bribe to Indian officials in exchange of favourable terms for solar power contracts. This was concealed from the US banks and investors from whom the Adani group raised billions of dollars for the project, resulting in the charges against the businessman.

Days after bribery charges surfaced and Donald Trump assumed office as the 47th US President, an executive order took effect directing the Department of Justice to pause enforcement of a nearly half-century-old law used to investigate the Adani Group.

The order that Donald Trump signed asked“the Attorney General to review guidelines and policies governing investigations and enforcement actions under the FCPA” in 180 days.

“During the review period, the Attorney General shall cease initiation of any new FCPA investigations or enforcement actions, unless the Attorney General determines that an individual exception should be made,” it said.

How Gautam Adani repond to bribery charges?

Gautam Adani responded to the alleged bribery and fraud allegations against the conglomerate, saying that the legal matter involving the US Department of Justice is a challenge which the Group has faced“not for the first time”.
