Russian DM releases footage of Ukrainian attack on military convoy escorting UN inspectors to ZNPP
(MENAFN) The Russian Defense Ministry has released footage showing a Ukrainian attack on a military convoy escorting UN inspectors to the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), Europe’s largest nuclear facility. Moscow accused Ukraine of launching the strikes to disrupt the scheduled rotation of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) personnel at the plant.
The IAEA has stationed observers at the facility since September 2022, after it came under Russian control. The personnel rotation requires Ukrainian cooperation, as international travelers must pass through Ukrainian-held territory to reach the site. However, the planned rotation for Wednesday was canceled due to “intense military activity,” according to the IAEA.
The Russian footage depicts several attacks on the military convoy, including artillery shells, mortar rounds, and kamikaze drones. The ministry claimed the armored vehicles transporting departing UN inspectors sustained shrapnel damage during the assault.
While the IAEA has not assigned blame for the incident, Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi expressed disappointment over the disruption, calling it "completely unacceptable" that staff safety had been compromised.
Ukraine has accused Russia of carrying out attacks on its own personnel as part of a strategy of “nuclear blackmail,” alleging Moscow is pressuring the IAEA to use Russian-controlled routes for transporting staff. The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned Ukraine’s actions, claiming the strikes highlight Ukraine's “unreliability” and “terrorist nature.” Moscow also noted that Ukraine had obstructed an IAEA rotation in December 2023, targeting infrastructure linked to the ZNPP and its host city, Energodar.
