European countries express desire to become part of Ukraine peace discussions

(MENAFN) The Weimar+ group, consisting of France, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain, the UK, the European External Action Service, and the European Commission, has called for participation in the peace talks aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict, which are reportedly being arranged between Russia and the US. The group emphasized that lasting peace in Ukraine is essential for strong transatlantic security.

The statement followed a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, during which they agreed to begin negotiations to resolve the conflict. The Weimar+ countries insisted that Ukraine and Europe must be involved in these talks and that Ukraine should receive strong security guarantees as part of any settlement.

While the timing of the talks remains uncertain, the Kremlin has expressed its readiness to engage, though it insists that Ukrainian neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification must be part of the resolution. Following the call with Putin, Trump spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who expressed a strong desire for peace. Trump and Zelensky arranged for a meeting with US officials in Munich as an initial step in the peace process. Trump also mentioned plans to meet Putin in the near future, potentially in Saudi Arabia.
