UK Targets Russian Cybercrime Syndicate ZSERVERS with New Sanctions
(MENAFN) On Tuesday, the UK government imposed new sanctions on a Russian cyber entity, ZSERVERS, which is accused of enabling large-scale ransomware attacks worldwide. The sanctions also extend to six key members of the ZSERVERS group, which is said to be part of a broader cybercrime network involved in a variety of malicious activities.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy commented on the sanctions, stating that it is no surprise that such cybercriminal operations are thriving within Russia, given the country’s lack of action against them. He stressed the importance of countering these threats to protect the UK's national security.
The UK government highlighted the serious impact of these cybercrimes, noting that they have caused widespread disruptions to essential services, compromised sensitive data, and generated $1 billion in revenue from victims globally in 2023 alone. These attacks are considered a persistent and significant threat to both private and public sectors, and the UK is committed to taking strong action against those responsible.
